My name is Marybeth. I would like to tell you the story of my cousin’s pit bull Nyla. In our eyes she is truly a hero.
My cousin Danielle volunteers with a pet rescue. She has helped rescue numerous dogs and fostered many dogs over the years. Nyla has always been like a Nanny dog to all the foster dogs that have come to her home. She watches over them and teaches them. She helps socialize them and prepare them for their forever families. Nyla can be very energetic but she is gentle with the puppies and her heart is as big as her pittie smile.
Last summer, Danielle took in a boxer puppy who was blind and needed his eyes removed. She called him Nico and Nyla took to him immediately. She became his eyes and the two became inseparable. Needless to say, Nico became a foster fail – my cousin couldn’t part with him. He joined the family which includes Nyla, her other boxer Phoenix and Teddy her Schipperke.
Recently, my cousin took all four dogs to her campsite in Tidioute, PA as she has done many times. Somehow, Nyla managed to escape. Danielle searched for her frantically but there was no sign of her anywhere. She spent the rest of her vacation putting up flyers in all the surrounding towns, going to shelters and vets offices and posting her all over social media. Needless to say, my cousin was heartsick. Her dogs are her babies, especially Nyla. She is so special and Nico really depends on her. It broke Danielle’s heart to come back home without her but she still had people out there trying to find her. To make matters worse, Nyla was lost in the Allegheny National Forest and there are a lot of coyotes and other predators.
As soon as she finished work the following Friday she drove the two hours back to camp to try again to find her but she was still nowhere to be found. At the end of the weekend she had to leave again to go to work the next day. Things seemed hopeless.
Then a miracle happened. Her neighbors at camp called and said Nyla was standing in their yard and they were able to get her inside. After twelve days she had found her way back!
My cousin immediately drove the two hours back and was reunited with her girl. Nyla had lost a lot of weight but was otherwise ok! She was so happy to see my cousin and the rest of the dogs she jumped right into the car. Danielle was given the miracle of getting Nyla back and just in time for her birthday. It was the only gift she wanted.
Nyla somehow managed to survive in dangerous conditions for twelve days. We are thrilled to know that she is back home where she belongs. She is our hero and Nico’s as well.
